Someone in the springs is apt to make a million dollars if they'd make a decent, 24 hour, donut shop. the drive up the mountain isn't worth the carbon footprint. Good, big donuts for a big price. I'm not a chain guy, but I would satiate my thirst for fried sugar at Dunkin' sooner than make the drive again.

  • Bryan M.

The extra large cinnamon rolls and donuts look impressive, but they are very dry. By the time the outside is done, the middle is overcooked. I'm glad they're finally making the donuts up here now though. It's an okay place for the area, but only because there's not another donut place in town.

  • Bev C.

Love the maple glazed donut! Chocolate iced cake very good too. Apple fritter was big and delicious. Ice cream also good. If you're a donut lover make this your stop in Woodland Park!

My husband and I split a donut- which was good. We each got a breakfast burrito- I would say this place was good- but nothing to write home about.

  • Tracy D.

These doughnuts cause me to stop every time I drive through and they give you a great excuse to drive up too. Prices all a little high but worth it.

  • Danielle R.

We were only here 3 days and we went twice plus took a half dozen for the ride home. The burritos were fantastic whether smothered or not. The donuts were delicious and yes-homemade. (Another reviewer commented that they didn't taste fresh or homemade and I'm not sure what's going on with their taste buds.) The workers were not all that chipper but it seemed they were mostly concerned with getting customers through the line quickly. And they did just that. Can't wait till we come back to Colorado for more!

  • Chris S.

Visited this place twice. Once for breakfast once for coffee and donuts. The breakfast was below average and I wouldn't go back for breakfast again. We had the breakfast burrito with green chili and it was sweet... their biscuits and gravy has won awards, but I was not impressed with it (which I feel I am easily impressed). The donuts are average to good and the coffee was solid. Overal not horrible in a pinch, but I won't go out of my way for it.

These donuts are huge and at a great price! The did give us a military discount as well! They have ice cream but we didn't try that, the donuts are amazing and not one of us could eat a whole one! Yum!

  • Liz A.

Came here with some friends after camping and had every intention of getting a donut. Then one of my friends said this place actually has really good breakfast burritos smothered in gravy. So I went with a sausage and bacon burrito smothered in gravy. Food was prepared super fast and was delicious. Canny believe I've never had a burrito smothered in gravy before. I also couldn't believe we went to the donut mill and didn't get donuts so we each ordered one to go. Their original glazed donut was amazing. I wish I had one right now. Prices were reasonable on everything.

Great donuts, wish I could eat the biscuits and gravy! Always looking for a vegetarian version. This is a really cute place and the donuts are huge. I love grabbing breakfast from mom and pop places where I can. The breakfast burritos are good too, although I wish there were more hot sauce options.

  • Diane B.

This place was just OK. The donuts were quite large, but there wasn't much variety and they didn't taste particularly fresh or homemade. They were more akin to jumbo dunkin donuts. My sister got icecream, which was creamy enough, but the chocolate flavor was hardly noticeable.

  • Angie K.

I really want to like this place, but I've been disappointed each & every time I have eaten the donuts here. Since I live in WP, I want to give my business to locals. They rarely have cake donuts, the raised & glazed yeast donuts all taste the same. They are dough in some shape, maybe some cinnamon, then a tasteless glaze. I wish I had lived here when it was good, as I love donuts! You can get better ones at the local gas stations.

Beware of this place, chances are you will get sick. Have been in the kitchen and it is extremely dirty. They store brand new, baked donuts by the dishwashing machine so they get sprayed with dirty water every time the sink is turned on. The fryer they use looks like it hasn't been cleaned since the 80's & on top of that the donuts aren't even good tasting. The best thing there, biscuits and gravy are pretty good but the gravy they use comes straight out of a bag, not made in house. The dining room is never clean and during the summer you can often find dead bugs right by the tables on the windowsills. If you're looking for a tasty donut and a good, fresh cup of coffee don't go to this ran down joint.

  • Susi H.

Stopped by for a snack after hiking to "Horse Thief Falls". We did like very much the old town feel that this establishment exudes. The dining room looks like an old home and it's pretty much completely covered in wood from floor to ceilings. It could use some cleaning, that's for sure. We chose a table near the window and there were all sort of dead bugs on the sill and on the frame. :-/ We had a doughnut each and a coffee to share. I'd like to report that it was the most magnificent coffee, and the most delicious doughnut I have ever had...but sadly it was a coffee and doughnut. A HUGE doughnut, but it just tasted so ordinary. Very much like the flavors we could have expected from our Dunkin Doughnuts on Rockrimmon. It sort of saddens me, cause we do love to cater to local business and NON chains as much as possible, but truly I can't say we were impressed. We may be back if we need a snack on our way back to COS after a hike...or we may not. It just wasn't that exciting to make it memorable.

Not sure if it was an off day or what. The donuts we ordered, while huge, were tasteless. Before moving here, we'd heard of The famous Donut Mill and we're excited to try it. Very disappointed. The coffee was great and the staff very friendly.

The smothered sausage burrito is great. It looses a star because they always seem to be out of the doughnuts we want when we get there.

We went on a Saturday afternoon near closing time so the selection was apparently limited (we didn't see any cinnamon rolls or apple fritters). But the donuts are absolutely delicious. My favorite is the sugar raised yeast donut- it would be worth the drive for sure. My husband loved the glazed cake donut. We also got some Blue Bell ice-cream and I appreciated the free samples. The blackberry ice-cream was good but I loved the peach vanilla! My husband got the tin roof sundae ice-cream right on top of a glazed donut! We ordered a half dozen donuts to go and I was a little bummed that he just put them loose in a bag with no tissue paper instead of putting them in a box, which I think leads to them being wet the next day. But the donuts were still tasty the next day. I think the price of the donuts is excellent- in Illinois they would be double the price!

  • Debbie B.

Unfortunately I have to lower my rating from five to three stars because the first time we came we thought the donuts were really good, but every time since it hasn't been so. I also tried the chorizo burrito in hope of some redemption, but no, I'm sorry. Not to mention, some of their donuts are $3 a piece. I realize they're huge but they're not worth that.

Be prepared to by carted out in a coma. The donuts are not the star of the show here, but are the least of what the donut mill has to offer. The variety of baked goods are all sugary, soft, hot and delightful. Paired up the best ice cream in the world (tm) Bluebell, which they serve every conceivable flavor of, it's sugar-rush heaven. The place isn't really geared toward dine in, but has serviceable places to sit and munch on the goodies. The prices are fair, the service good and it is a clean, well-lit and friendly place to buy muffins, cookies, tarts, ice-cream and yes, even donuts. The donuts are passable, which is odd compared to the good quality on most of the other baked goods. Haven't tried their other kind of fare, from biscuits and gravy to sandwiches, but why oh God why would you waste your visit on those things with all the sweet, sweet things on offer? Bottom line: if you've got a sugar itch, Donut Mill, with their great variety of scrumptious sweets, has just the right combination to your taste.

Stale doughnuts at 4:00 could be time of day. Seating area was dirty and the staff was hanging out in the kitchen. Work in your doughnuts and guest service.

  • Jim L.

I bit pricey for donuts but they are huge! They are ok for taste. Good coffee, they have other things like breakfast burritos and biscuits and gravy. Time slows down here don't be surprised if you need to wait a little.

Simple, charming donut & ice cream shop right off the main road. Everything we ordered was tasty. Our next trip through I want to try the biscuits and gravy.

  • Melanie P.

The Donut Mill was recommended to us by friends. We stopped and had a French donut. It was HUGE and very good. It took us a couple of days to finish it. We did not try anything else but all the bakery goods were huge and looked very good.. I would recommend it for the donuts.

  • Rachel H.

Price was awesome ($1.05 for a huge chocolate glazed donut? yeah!) and the weight of the donut was impressive, but there was a strange aftertaste that I couldn't shake off. This sounds crazy, but it was almost...gamey. Like venison. This wasn't something that my husband noticed, though, so maybe I'll give it another try next time I pass through Woodland Park. Glad it was open late afternoon on a Sunday, though!

I came in with my wife real quick and enjoyed it. The decor is great. Has its own style if you will. The service was good and the employees were young kids up front. I had the big glazed donut and wanted to eat it in one bite lol. My wife had the sugar raised and enjoyed it. We paid maybe $3? I forget but the sizes were much bigger than normal big chain donut shops so it evens out. Pass by if you're near and want a treat.

The Donut Mill is one of those local legends. It is a mom & pop that is typically busy in the mornings. Don't be surprised if they're sold out of something - especially the biscuits & gravy. All the donuts are good, but the massive apple fritter and cinnamon roll are sights to behold.

  • Jenny E.

The only thing I liked about this place was it had a really good selection of Blue Bell Ice Cream. Being from Texas, Blue Bell is by far my favorite and they had so many different choices! We tried the plain ol' donuts thinking it might be kind of like the ones you get on pikes peak but no... we found that taking a bite of donut and then a spoon of ice cream was the only way we could finish this very dry unflavorful donut. I can't speak for any of the other pastry selections but the only reason I would go back is for the ice cream. The Service there wasn't good at all. It was a high school girl probably on summer break at her first summer job so I shouldn't be to critical plus its a donut shop. But it was just awkward that she was waiting around basically watching us as we decided what we wanted.

  • Katie K.

I had a sugar donut and a raspberry filled donut. The sugar one was awesome. The raspberry one was just okay. The raspberry filling wasn't very good.

Went last night just as the snow began to fall. The donuts are the size of a loaf of bread gravy and biscuits were really yummy they had plenty of hot drinks like apple cider and coffee . I think I ate my carbs allowance for the next few days but the place is good. If you don't want donuts ther is always ice cream.

  • Julie R.

We love the Donut Mill - you just need to get there early, and especially during ski season. They can run out if you don't get there early. I always have the maple bar which ROCKS, and hubby has the biscuits and gravy which he loves!! The donuts are bigger than normal and they are fresh with the right balance between dough and glaze. Too much glaze + not enough dough = too sweet donut. We can't find a good donut place in the Springs so Donut Mill is a good alternative to no donuts at all.

I've been hideously sick all week, and my husband tempted me into eating this morning by saying he would go drive the long way up to the Donut Mill for 'the best donuts you've ever tasted.' He brought home a cinnamon twist, a cinnamon roll, and two lemon-filled donuts. Upon first review, the donuts got 5 stars! Hilariously big sizes and they looked spectacular. Once we cracked into them, we discovered another story. The cinnamon twist was ok. The glaze isn't very flavorful, and I got no cinnamon flavor from it at all. It was a little dry, but as it was a twist I was expecting that. The cinnamon roll - wow! It is as big as a dinner plate and slathered in glaze. Sadly, the roll itself was dry, flavorless, and a little stale tasting, while the glaze itself managed to be dry as well. I was looking forward to trying the lemon filled donuts the most, so I put the other two aside and cut one of those powdered sugar beauties in half. The only words I could utter were 'you have got to be kidding me.' From a donut as big around as a cereal bowl, there was a small, quarter-sized dollop of lemon curd inside. 'It will be better on the other side,' promises my husband. Sadly, the other side presents the same. We did find more filling pressed into the edges of the donut, but still the proportion was a bit shy. This was, sadly, the best donut we had today. All in all, I feel like my poor lemon donut - unfulfilled.

I have tried so hard to like this place! Coworkers told me when I first got to the Springs that this was a must-stop on the way out 24 to our college's cabin in Divide. I have now been about 6 times and have not seen the appeal once. I want to like it, but so far I have tried: * bear claw = dry and flaky and sucked all the moisture out of my mouth * lemon-filled doughnut = dry and tasting rather like an enormous stale dinner roll with neon yellow lemon-filling only spreading through half of the doughnut... on the other half I was painfully on my own * tres leches cake = good... okay... sweet * biscuits and gravy = stale biscuits, lukewarm gravy with very little meat and too much pepper * pineapple upside down cake = not bad, but left a greasy feel in my mouth * bread = nothing special, but made for an okay sandwich the next day The other thing to mention is that the last two times I've gone, I've gotten the same teenage boy behind the counter, and he has given very disappointing customer service. He clearly doesn't want to be there. I think I'm giving up on the Mill... I wanted to find out why others thought it was so good, but I gave it enough of a chance, and it must just not be my taste.

Wouldn't ever get doughnuts from here again. They tasted like they had been sitting out for days! We drove 30 minutes to try this place because we heard about it from some friends. Their huge cinnamon rolls looked like plastic sitting on the shelf behind the register. Don't waist your time or money on this place. Safeway has better doughnuts.

  • Mike H.

Size is the best attribute of a Donut Mill donut. I took a picture of their cinnamon rolls, which are HUGE. Honestly they're big enough for three people. And the apple fritter, which is typically bigger than a regular donut, was twice as big as the biggest apple fritter I'd ever eaten. You'll get a lot of donut for your dollar here. The biscuits are above average in size also. If you like gravy, then sausage gravy is the default unless you try the bacon gravy, which is only available on weekends. They biscuits and gravy are so filling that a full order, meaning of two biscuits served open face and covered in gravy, will probably feed two people. On the burrito side, I chose the sausage over bacon because they were out of veggie and we'd ordered bacon gravy on a full plus a half order. Good choices because like any 'proper' breakfast burrito, egg was the dominant ingredient. The downside of the donuts was that their size was more memorable than their quality. The chocolate glazed, and the apple fritter, tasted good though not great. But again, they're all oversized.

My husband found out about this place from a coworker years ago and was impressed with the size of the pastries. Awhile back we drove up on a snowy weekend morning from the Springs and waited in a very long line (which is a good sign most of the time) to find out that they were out of whatever it was he wanted (I can't remember if it was a bear claw or something along those lines) so we left. It happens, what are you going to do? We came up again and the service was less than stellar. The employee that "helped" us was rude. The tables were dirty. I felt like we were putting her out by being there. This time around my husband was not impressed with the quality of his pastry. I had the biscuits and gravy and it wasn't too bad, but not spectacular. The whole reason why I am writing this now is because we stopped by there a week ago on Wednesday morning. NO ONE TO BE FOUND. We walked in and stood there and no one came out to help us. No one. Not a soul. Not a "give me a sec, I'll be right out" called from the back. And now we will never go back. After reading the other reviews I'm happy to see that we aren't the only ones who have had bad experiences there. I would hope a business owner would read reviews and make changes to increase their business and satisfy their customers, especially when people from Colorado Springs are willing to drive up to Woodland Park just for a donut. Word of mouth is gold-and they are going to lose out. I really wish this could have turned out differently but alas, it was not to be. The one star is because of the service (or lack there of) not necessarily the quality of the food. In the food industry these two things go hand-in-hand in my opinion.

Not getting all the love for this place. With this place getting so much buzz, I had to check it out. Took the drive from Colorado Springs specifically to come here for Saturday breakfast. First off, the place is cute enough, and exudes small-town charm. I found both people working behind the counter to be surly and not customer-friendly (so much for small town hospitality). The donuts are huge, but nothing out of the ordinary. I ordered a huge chocolate glaze that left me unimpressed, other than the size. They also are well known for their biscuits and gravy. They score points for using fresh biscuits, and not the pop-and-fresh variety seen at some diners. But the gravy was pretty standard. Overall, definitely not worth the drive clear up to Woodland Park. I guess their donuts are passable (and better than the Safeway variety), but I have sampled better donuts at Dunkin' and Krispy Kreme.

We love the donut mill!! I don't think I have ever had a bad experience there, and I have never NOT stopped at the donut mill on our way home to Kansas from our cabin in Colorado. Great donuts, great service. Get their early because the apple fritters go quick and believe me, you want one!

Fantastic unglazed cake donuts. Tasty and moist and don't leave a greasy aftertaste or feel in my mouth unlike commercial donuts. Delicious biscuits and gravy!

Huge disappointment. I love biscuits and gravy and had heard that the Donut Mill had the best. My fiancé and I drove from the Springs out to Woodland Park one afternoon and just had to see what all the fuss was about. Upon entering the restaurant we were not greeted warmly. The teenager behind the counter was so awkward that he couldn't even answer our simple questions, like do we stand at the counter and wait for our food or do we sit down? Where do we get our drinks and silverware? Anyways, the place looked pretty dumpy. Our biscuits and gravy came out on a styrofoam plate and we had plastic utensils to eat it. We were so hoping that the food would at least taste good. We were sadly mistaken. The gravy was so bland, it seemed as if it was scooped right out of a can from Sysco. The biscuits were decent but the horrible flavor of the white glop on top ruined anything that could be deemed as tasty. The only flavor we got from the gravy was a small amount of black pepper. Thankfully we found some tobasco on the table to make this meal somewhat edible. How can this place have won best biscuits and gravy year after year? Who votes for these?! I don't normally like to write bad reviews, I have worked in the food service industry for most of my life and think most horrible reviews are just bullshit, but I can't keep this disappointing and disgusting experience to myself. This place is not worth the trip, unless you are looking for some ice cream, of which they seem to have a decent selection. There are plenty of other breakfast places that have good service and acceptable food. I couldn't help but laugh at the whole experience, maybe my expectations were too high, I was only hoping for a friendly atmosphere and tasty biscuits and gravy but I got the opposite. Oh well, ya live ya learn! Won't be returning!

the worst biscuits and gravy i have ever had in my life.We were told they were the best in colorado so i have to assume the people saying this have never had them anywhere else. The place is a sad joke and i would not tell anyone to go there.

We love this place, though I couldn't give it five stars for their donuts are just that...donuts. Overall, they lack creativity and that edge that can really make them stand out from others. Yes, they have giant cinnamon-roll-like donuts, and their fritters are very big (but not my favorite style of those), but you look at the rest and see normalcy. On any given holiday, they rarely use holiday-themed sprinkles colors (my kid's fav. are the sprinkles), how much effort does that require? Or just a different color frosting now and then. Something to make the donuts DIFFERENT. Without that, they are just really good donuts....but don't stand out like Voodoo Donuts in Oregon do. So apart from the donuts, the shop itself is a very picturesque place to grab a quick bite and fun to visit with great views of Pikes Peak. Their biscuits and gravy are pretty good. They offer a very large selection of Blue Bell ice cream flavors. Coffee is really good. Parking can be limited, but if their lot is full, rather than park at the vet's office (which they kindly request you don't do), just go half a block east or west and you'll find a good mix of street parking and public lots. A short walk could be good for you, too, given what you're about to eat. :)

My favorite place in Woodland Park-a prerequisite stop before going fishing. Simple menu-simple donuts, cinnamon rolls, bearclaws and it gives you a nice smalltown feel. Last time I stopped in before closing, they gave me several extra to take home, what more could you ask for?

    (5)
  • Heather G.

Great for huge doughnuts. We try to stop by there anytime we are in Woodland Park early. I was always told how awesome the biscuits and gravy are, but for me they are a little to spicy. The staff is always pleasant! The parking can be a pain! One of my faves in Woodland Park for sure!

Update: Went back to Donut Mill on way up to Cripple Creek this past Saturday and tried the Bear Claw. The Bear Claw is huge and dipped in chocolate on one side. It is soft and chewy and very good. Not sure what the reviewer a couple posts down meant by "dry and flaky and sucked all moisture out of my mouth", I didn't experience that at all.

I have worked 100ft from the Mill for 7 years and I am DONE! Used to be the best and now they are the worst. They used to buy local, fresh, sausage to make their biscuits and gravy but I have not seen that delivery truck in years. The breakfast burritos used to be a great deal and come with fresh salsa, now they are bland microwaved garbage with the cheapest salsa you can find. Just when I thought it couldn't possibly get worse they have found a way to screw up the donuts. They leave this disgusting sour/old grease taste in your mouth you will be burping up for hours. I thought it was a fluke the first time it happened, but now I sit hear writing this review buuuuuurp.........seriously makes me want to puke. The owners should be ashamed taking a landmark staple and ruining it. I am done for good!
